About the ingredients

Ashwagandha is the root of a plant called Withania somnifera. It has a long history in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India, where it's been used as a rejuvenative tonic and for memory. What you're holding is a concentrated root extract: a 10:1 extract, which means the 600 mg in each capsule is drawn from roughly 6 grams of dried root. It's standardized to 2% withanolides, the compounds ashwagandha is usually measured by, so the strength stays consistent from one capsule to the next.

The other ingredient is piperine, the compound that gives black pepper its sharp bite. There's 14 mg of it in each capsule, and it's the second medicinal ingredient in the formula.

What it's for

Here's what Kasha Nutrition Ashwagandha with Black Pepper is licensed for, in the exact terms Health Canada approved:

  • Ashwagandha is traditionally used in Ayurveda as a rejuvenative tonic.
  • Ashwagandha is traditionally used in Ayurveda for memory enhancement.

Both of these are traditional-use claims. That means they come from ashwagandha's long history in Ayurvedic practice, not from a specific modern outcome we can promise you. We've kept the wording the way it appears on the license on purpose. It's the honest version.

How to take it

  • One capsule a day, for adults 19 and over. That's the full dose.
  • You can take it whenever fits your routine, with or without food. Some people take it in the morning, others in the evening. One thing to keep in mind: drowsiness is a known effect for some people (more on that just below), so until you know how your body responds, take it at a time when you're not about to drive or operate machinery.

What to expect

Ashwagandha has been used as a daily tonic in Ayurvedic tradition for a long time, and tradition treats it as something you take steadily rather than something with a switch you flip. We're not going to hand you a timeline, because the traditional use it's licensed for doesn't come with one, and we'd rather not invent a number.

What we'll say is this: take it daily, the way the directions describe, and give it a fair, consistent run. Everybody's different, and timing varies from one person to the next. If you're taking it with a particular goal in mind, your healthcare provider is the best person to help you decide what makes sense for your situation.

Before you start

These cautionary statements come with our Health Canada license. They apply to anyone in the situations below.

Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are taking any other medication or natural health products, as the black pepper/piperine may alter their effectiveness

Consuming this product with alcohol, other drugs, or natural health products that have sedative properties is not recommended.

The official adverse reaction language, as printed on the label:

Some people may experience drowsiness. Exercise caution if operating heavy machinery, driving a motor vehicle, or involved in activities requiring mental alertness.

Common questions

Can both men and women take it? +

Yes. The licensed dose is for adults 19 and over, and there's nothing gender-specific about it. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider first, since that's flagged in the cautions above.

Can I take it with my medications? +

Please check with your healthcare provider first. The piperine in this formula can affect how some medications are absorbed, so it's worth a quick conversation before you start.

Can I take it alongside my other supplements? +

We always recommend talking to your healthcare provider before combining any supplements. Every body is different, and your provider knows your personal health history best. If they give you the green light, we suggest introducing one supplement at a time and seeing how your body responds before adding the next.

How is this different from your Ashwagandha & L-Theanine? +

This formula contains 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract and 14 mg of piperine per capsule. Our Ashwagandha & L-Theanine pairs a smaller amount of ashwagandha (300 mg) with L-Theanine instead. If you want ashwagandha on its own at the higher dose, this is the one. If you'd rather have it alongside L-Theanine, that's the other.

Why is there black pepper in it? +

Black pepper is where the piperine comes from. Piperine is the second medicinal ingredient in the formula, at 14 mg per capsule. The one thing worth knowing is the caution we mentioned above: piperine can affect how some medications are absorbed, so talk to your healthcare provider if you take anything regularly.

When should I take it? +

Whenever suits you, with or without food. Some people prefer mornings, some prefer evenings. Just keep the drowsiness note in mind until you know how it sits with you, and don't take it right before driving or anything that needs full alertness.

What sizes do you offer? +

Our current size is 120 capsules. We're always working on expanding our catalogue with new sizes and product lines, so keep an eye out. What should my bottle look like when it arrives? +

If anything looks off, like a broken or missing seal, damage, or anything unusual about the capsules inside, email us at info@kashanutrition.com with a quick photo and we'll take care of it right away.
