About the ingredient

Almost everyone has cinnamon in the kitchen, but not all cinnamon is the same plant. What you usually find in the grocery aisle is Cassia. What's in this bottle is Ceylon, which comes from the inner bark of a tree called Cinnamomum verum. The name translates to "true cinnamon," and ours is sourced from Sri Lanka, where the tree has grown for a very long time.

The two types look and smell similar, but they differ in one compound worth knowing about: coumarin. Cassia carries a fair amount of it. Ceylon has only traces. One of the commonly discussed differences between the two species is their coumarin content.

There's also a small amount of black pepper in the mix. Cinnamon and black pepper have been paired in cooking and traditional preparations for centuries, so it's a familiar combination rather than an unusual one. The piperine that comes from the black pepper is also the reason for one of the label cautions, which I'll get to below.

What's in the bottle

Medicinal ingredients (per capsule)Cinnamomum verum (Organic Ceylon cinnamon) 750 mg; piperine, from black pepper, 4.5 mg
Non-medicinal ingredientsHypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose
Free fromGluten and wheat, soy, egg, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin, mollusk, sulphites, added sugar, and artificial colors and preservatives
All ingredients used areVegan, non-GMO, and cruelty-free

Color is the easiest way to tell you're holding something that grew. Ceylon cinnamon varies a little batch to batch depending on the season and the soil it came from. The dose and potency in every capsule stay consistent.

What it's for

  • Two things, both covered by the product's Health Canada license.
  • Cinnamomum verum is traditionally used in Herbal Medicine for loss of appetite. That's a traditional-use claim, which means it draws on a long record of how the ingredient has been used, and it's the framing Health Canada has approved here.
  • It's also a source of antioxidants.
  • You may have heard cinnamon talked about in other contexts. We keep what we say to what the license actually covers, which is the appetite-related traditional use and the antioxidants. If you're curious about anything beyond that, your healthcare provider is the right person to ask.

How to take it

  • The recommended dose is one capsule, three times a day. Most people take one with each main meal, so breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Taking it with food may be easier on the stomach for some people.
  • This product is for adults 18 and over.

What to expect

Cinnamon isn't the kind of thing you take and feel a switch flip. If there's anything to notice, people tend to notice it gradually rather than right away. We recommend following the recommended dosage instructions for a while before deciding how it's working for you.

Timing varies from one person to the next, and the antioxidant side of things isn't really something you'd feel day to day anyway. If you're keeping an eye on something specific, your healthcare provider can help you read it better than a label can.

Before you start

These cautionary statements come with our Health Canada license. They apply to anyone in the situations below.

Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you:

  • are taking any other medications or natural health products, since the black pepper (piperine) in this product may alter how well they work
  • have symptoms that persist or get worse
  • are breastfeeding
  • have diabetes

Do not use this product if you are pregnant.

If your stomach tends to be on the sensitive side, taking each capsule with a meal usually helps.

Common questions

What's the difference between Ceylon cinnamon and regular cinnamon? +

Most of the cinnamon on grocery shelves is Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia). Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum) is a different species, sometimes called true cinnamon. The practical difference is coumarin: Cassia and Ceylon cinnamon differ in their naturally occurring coumarin content. Cassia typically contains more coumarin, while Ceylon cinnamon contains considerably lower amounts.

Why is there black pepper in it? +

The formula includes a small amount of black pepper, which is where the piperine on the label comes from. One thing worth knowing: piperine can change how some medications and other supplements are absorbed. So if you take anything on a regular basis, check with your healthcare provider before starting.

When should I take it? +

One capsule with each main meal works well for most people, so breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Taking it with food is easier on the stomach.

Can I take it if I have diabetes? +

Please check with your healthcare provider first. Diabetes is specifically flagged in this product's cautions, so it's worth a conversation with them before you begin.

Can I take it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding? +

Not during pregnancy. That's a firm contraindication on the license. If you're breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider before starting.

Can I take it with my other supplements? +

We always recommend talking to your healthcare provider before combining any supplements. Every body is different, and your provider knows your personal health history best. If they give you the green light, we suggest introducing one supplement at a time and seeing how your body responds before adding the next.

What size does it come in? +

Our current size is 120 capsules, which works out to about a 40-day supply at three a day. We're always working on expanding our catalogue with new sizes and product lines, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, you can find us on Amazon at our Amazon storefront, where we run ongoing promotions, offer Subscribe & Save, and bulk-purchase discounts at checkout.

Do you offer a satisfaction guarantee? +

Yes. We back your first bottle with our first-order satisfaction policy. If you try it and it isn't the right fit, just email us at info@kashanutrition.com with your Amazon order ID and we'll sort out a refund to your original payment method. We take care of it personally over email.

What should my bottle look like when it arrives? +

Every bottle ships with a double seal: a shrink-wrap around the outside and a tamper-evident seal under the cap. Some of our products arrive in a small outer box and some ship straight in an Amazon mailer. Both are normal. If anything looks off, like a broken or missing seal, a damaged bottle, leaking, or anything unusual about the capsules inside, email us at info@kashanutrition.com with a quick photo and we'll take care of it right away.

Third-party testing

Every batch is independently third-party tested. A sample report is available here.

Want results for your specific bottle? Find the lot number on the bottle (bottom, or top just below the rim), and email it to info@kashanutrition.com with your order ID. We'll send the test results for your batch.
